F.W. Gilbert School

History

F.W. Gilbert School is located in the rural community of Pinawa, approximately 120 km north east of Winnipeg. The community is situated on the shores of the Winnipeg River and the boundary of Whiteshell Provincial Park.

The town and the school were constructed in 1963-64 with the development of Atomic Energy of Canada’s Whiteshell Laboratories. F.W. Gilbert School was the first school to be built in Pinawa and was known as the Pinawa Elementary School with students in grades K-8. In 1967 the name was changed to F.W. Gilbert in honor of Mr. Fred Gilbert, one of the founding developers of the research site. Also in 1967, the high school was completed and F.W. Gilbert’s grades were changed to K-6.

The School

F.W. Gilbert School is a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school with an enrollment of 94 students. Most students live within easy walking or biking distance from the school but we do have a number of School of Choice students from the surrounding areas.  The school includes a gymnasium, also used by the community, a Resource Room, a Computer Lab Room, a large Kindergarten room, a Multipurpose Room, a library, and 6 regular classrooms.

All classrooms, offices and library are connected to an internal school network of computers and have internet access in each classroom.  We also have a COW (Computer on Wheels) which contains 10 laptop that can be hooked up to the internet from each classroom.

They are a committed group of students who help younger students solve any problems they may have on the playground at recess. They also play the role of Ambassadors. In this position they seek out younger students who seem lonely and try to get them involved with the other students their age.. We are very proud of our Super Squad.
